Gunter Henrik Von Hamm was born in Bremen, Germany in 1925 and studied law at the University o Wurtzburg. He moved to Hawaii after World War II in 1949 where he worked for his grand uncle Conrad in the textile department of Von Hamm-Young Co. Ltd. 

In 1963 he founded his own textile company, G. Von Hamm Textiles Inc. Through this company, Gunter created over 50,000 designs that were distributed across the islands including big retailers like Hilo Hattie and Surf Line Hawaii-Jams World. 

He mentored and worked from the ground floor with many companies we know today, like Rob Burns the founder of Local Motion n 1977. He had a reputation of producing high quality products while remaining very caring and helpful to all who knew him.

In 1996 he received the lifetime achievement award from the Hawaii Fashion Industry Association at the 10th Annual Governor's Fashion Awards.
