Popo’s Collection

Limited edition, one-of-a-kind bags made from the rarest of Hawai‘i textiles.

Popo’s Collection

Martha "Popo" Leong was the manager of the Yardage and Notions Department of the old Liberty House store in Kailua, Hawai‘i from 1951 to 1979. Over the years, she amassed a collection of some of the best and rarest textiles in Hawai‘i.

In 2007 Popo Leong passed away and left much of her fabrics untouched and hidden away. Her collection of fine textiles was recently discovered and inventoried in 2012. Her rare collection of fabrics are currently being made into limited edition bags that will never be produced again. These bags are not created using replica material. They are made from the actual vintage textiles.

This temporary project is called Popo’s Collection will end once all the material is gone.

Vintage Fabrics

Bags are not made from recycled clothing—all products are made with vintage fabrics in mint or near mint condition from the 1950s, 1960s and 1980s.

Style & Quality

The styles of bags are modern, fun, and meant to showcase these wonderful fabrics. They are great for everyday use as well as for special occasions. These bags are hand sewn by a professional seamstress with over 20 years experience. Each bag is one-of-a-kind, lightweight, machine washable, compact, made entirely with vintage fabrics (even the liners). Some bags are reversible.

Textiles include:

Alfred Shaheen
Shaheen’s Surf N’ Sand Handprints
T.H.C. Hawaiian Textiles
G.V.H. Hawaiiprint
Kiilani Design
TUREK of HAWAII for Polynesian Textiles
Von Hamm-Young (VHY Hawaiian Textiles)
and more.

From the Store Owner

Currently, I have a small inventory of bags that are for sale. Previously, these bags could only be purchased by appointment as we do not have a physical store location. Each year, we participate in the Temari Trash & Treasure Craft Fair in early November (it is the only craft fair that we participate in).

Once a bag is sold, it will be removed from the store listing. As each bag is a one of a kind creation, there is no inventory. Once it is sold, it is gone.

Should you have any special requests, please feel free to contact me.

Aloha,

Stacey Leong
